In fact, Harleysville has a high number of employees who attain professional designations each year. Many of these same employees have earned promotions by taking advantage of self-improvement opportunities, and serve as role models for their fellow employees.

Through a network of local and regional offices, our agents have access to key decision-makers and receive on-site assistance and guidance from our sales and underwriting professionals.

Since 2005, Harleysville has been a Trusted Choice ® Company Partner, which further demonstrates its commitment to independent agents as its sole distribution outlet. Created by the Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, Trusted Choice is a national consumer brand uniting more than 10,000 independent agencies with more than 50 insurance companies that support them.

When it comes to our agency partners, we are focused on:

  • Reflecting the broad spectrum of our agents’ needs by offering an extensive portfolio of competitive products, and being nimble, flexible and creative when presented with opportunities for profitable growth;

A focus on investors and shareholders

Marking a milestone in its history, Harleysville became a public company in 1986 after the successful public sale of 2,156,250 shares of Harleysville Group Inc. common stock. "Going public" was a major step toward securing the capital necessary to expand the company's operations over time.

On May 1, 2012, Nationwide acquired all of the outstanding publicly held shares of Harleysville Group common stock. Harleysville Group and its subsidiaries now are wholly owned by Nationwide.

A focus on the communities we serve

Harleysville employees are good corporate citizens who get involved to improve the communities we live in—and industry in which we work.

Both industry and community service is highly encouraged, as reflected by the number of employees involved on insurance industry association boards and committees, our long­standing reputation for providing leadership on industry issues, the agenda of Harleysville’s "Care Force" (a volunteer-based organization that serves hundreds of disadvantaged people every year), and support for the United Way and other charitable organizations.

Fun fact: Our efforts to spread goodwill throughout our organization and surrounding communities are epitomized by the universally famous "Smilie Button," which was actually invented by the Harleysville Worcester Insurance Company in 1965. One agent described the button as "the company’s mission statement."
